What a rich and meaningful story! Your imagery sets the scenes well, and your selection of audio fx is excellent.

It kept me engaged all the way to the end. Well done!

Your Game is very good 🤍

Hard work bore fruit

sadly it crashed on my virtual machine on startup. i see the book, then nothing happens

Aw man, I'm really sorry to hear that.

By any chance do you have the error report for the crash?

If it's possible I'd like to see if I can get a bugfix in for it.

(+1)

Also, what virtual machine are you using? I'd like to try reproducing the crash on my end

I am using VMware Workstation (free player) and win 11. I had to start your game through command line with renderer opengl3 to be able to get in-game. Maybe opengl3 is the problem?

(+1)

Hmm, that may be a possibility.

I think part of the problem was I developed this on a windows 8 machine, so I can't eliminate the idea that maybe it's a cross compatibility issue as well. Under the hood the engine is entirely using python and SDL2 bindings. I use the SDL2 software renderer for it, so it's probably trying to fetch the best renderer it can find on the virtual device... and maybe it has issues with that.

Are you running the VMware from a win 11 machine, or is the virtual machine running a win 11 instance?

(1 edit)

i use win11 and a win11 virtual machine for testing. yes

(+1)

Gotcha. I currently don't have a win11 machine, so I'll have to look into getting one to try this out. I've got a win 10 machine, so I can start there to see if that also produces this issue.

What was the exact command you used to get it running with the opengl3 renderer?

"your game executable" --rendering-driver opengl3

Hey wooolfy,

So some other folks on the jam submission page mentioned that they ran the game directly on their windows 11 and 10 machines without a VM, and it ran just fine. I have had enough folks play the game that no issue of viruses came up.

Considering this, would you be willing to try playing the game without a virtual machine? (I understand if not, but thought it was worth asking considering the other feedback I've gotten by now)

Oh my goodness! I absolutely love this. You did such a fantastic portrayal of a wartime setting with lots of details that got me thinking while I was reading. It was super immersive, and the art was simplistic yet effective and super charming. Plus, I adore the retro-feeling this work carried within it. The characters were three-dimensional and captured my attention straight away, as I got pulled into their narrative.

BTW, I also included an even more detailed review for you! (:

Thanks again for creating this! I enjoyed it immensely.

Hey hanako,

Thank you so much for this feedback! It's very encouraging to hear you enjoyed the story. That helps me a ton!

One question:

I'm still new to itch io, so I was wondering where I could find your detailed review... I cant seem to find it.

Edit: found the review, it was posted in the submissions feed :)

So I've had the chance to read your review, and thank you so much for leaving behind a thoughtful piece.

Your mapping of what stood out to you helped clarify what parts of the story got through (and thankfully it sounds like it got through just fine).

In the future if I write more novels or story heavy stuff I hope you don't mind if I send it your way as well. I really like how you break down details.

You're welcome. I'm glad it was useful to you.

Sorry about not replying right away, I was tired and went to sleep, so I only saw this when I got up. Good to hear you managed to figure out where the review was located on your own.

I definitely wouldn't mind leaving more break-downs/analyses for you, as well. Since sometimes seeing different POVs from readers can be enlightening to perceive how others view work differently. I may do more in-depth reviews for as much people as I feel like doing during the course of NaNoRenO 2024, too. I'll see how it goes.

Thanks for the reply.
